Termas del Daymán sits on the bank of the river that gives it its name, ten kilometres south of Salto, and most visitors never leave the pools. At the termas, an established public trail follows the bank of the Río Daymán through the riverside forest of the Uruguayan litoral: sauce criollo and sarandí with their feet in the water, ceibo and ingá behind them, rock shelves and still water where the trees reflect at the end of the day. This guided hike takes it at an easy pace, with a local guide who names what you are looking at. The trail is public; what you book here is the guide.
The hike reads the riverside forest by its distance from the water: sauce criollo and sarandí at the water's edge; ceibo, whose red flower is Uruguay's national flower, ingá, curupí, chal-chal, pitanga and tala behind them; and the lapacho, which flowers pink on bare branches before its leaves come out. It also covers the Ruta Verde, the native species the park is planting at the termas and around them with the support of CTM and CARU; the rock shelves and pools of the Daymán; and the birds of the same gallery forest that makes Salto a birdwatching stop.
