Daymán River Hike

Termas del Daymán sits on the bank of the river that gives it its name, 10 km south of Salto, and most visitors never leave the pools. At the termas, an established public trail follows the bank of the Río Daymán through the riverside forest of the Uruguayan litoral: sauce criollo and sarandí with their feet in the water, ceibo and ingá behind them, rock shelves and still water where the trees reflect at the end of the day. This guided hike takes it at an easy pace, with a local guide who names what you are looking at. The trail is public; what you book here is the guide.

What's Included

  • Guided hike along the established public trail on the bank of the Río Daymán at Termas del Daymán, with a local guide
  • The riverside forest read by its distance from the water: what grows with its roots in the river, what stands one step back and what makes the canopy
  • The natives you learn to tell apart: sauce criollo and sarandí at the water's edge; ceibo, whose red flower is Uruguay's national flower, ingá, curupí, chal-chal, pitanga and tala behind them; and the lapacho, which flowers pink on bare branches before its leaves come out
  • What the park is planting: the Ruta Verde, native species planted at the termas and around them with the support of CTM and CARU so that the whole area reads as the litoral it belongs to
  • The river itself: the rock shelves and pools of the Daymán, and the still water where the forest reflects in the last hour of light
  • Birds along the way: this is the same gallery forest that makes Salto a birdwatching stop, so herons, kingfishers and the hornero's clay-oven nests are usual company

Good to Know

The hike is easy and stays close to the water: closed shoes, water, a hat in summer and repellent. The Daymán rises after heavy rain; if the river is high when you book I will tell you. Early morning or the last two hours of light are the best times, for the heat and for the light on the water, and the hike combines naturally with a day at the pools: hike first, soak after. If the route runs through the municipal park, the park ticket is paid separately on the day. The hike is led in Spanish; if you need English, a note when you book lets me check what is possible. Meeting point at Termas del Daymán, confirmed with your booking. Free cancellation up to 24h before.
