The Place
The Dam That Holds the River
Salto Grande is the hydroelectric dam across the Uruguay River, north of the city. Uruguay and Argentina built it together and run it together, through the Comisión Técnica Mixta, and it has been generating since 1979. The road and railway bridge over the dam is the border crossing to Concordia: the buses to Argentina go over it, and so does the visit.
Behind the dam the river widens into a lake. On the Uruguayan shore are Parque del Lago, the Termas de Salto Grande with their water park, and the Hotel Horacio Quiroga. In front of it, when the river is high, the spillway is open and the dam is at its most impressive. That is the day to go.
The visit is free. A short film, a talk, then a bus across the international bridge to the viewpoint and down into the machine hall, about 90 minutes in all. Book in advance: the Uruguayan delegation takes bookings online and by phone. Take your ID or passport, because the bus crosses the bridge.

Plan It
Getting There and Making a Day of It
North of the city on the road to the international bridge, past Parque del Lago: about 20 minutes by car or taxi (fares on saltouruguay.com). On Fridays, the free bus from Termas del Daymán and Plaza Artigas.
A high river usually means the spillway is open, and that is the best day to see the dam. The river height is live on saltouruguay.com, and the Journal note Salto When the Weather Turns explains what a rise means for a visit.
The visit in the morning, then the water park or the lake shore, and lunch at the Hotel Horacio Quiroga. The Stay page covers sleeping by the lake.
The bridge over the dam is the land crossing to Concordia. The buses use it, and when the river passes 10.55 m and the passenger boat stops, it is the only way across. The Concordia day trip note has both routes.
