Located just 10 km south of Salto — Uruguay's second-largest city — Termas del Daymán is the country's most celebrated hot springs complex. Fed by the Sistema Acuífero Guaraní (SAG), one of the world's largest freshwater underground reservoirs, its waters surface at temperatures of up to 46 °C, making them the hottest natural thermal waters in Uruguay. The complex sits alongside the gentle Daymán River, surrounded by native palm groves, creating a setting that feels at once wild and deeply restorative.

A Serendipitous Discovery
Nobody was looking for water. The story of Termas del Daymán is one of the most unlikely origin stories in South American tourism.
Uruguay's state oil company ANCAP drilled along the Daymán River in search of petroleum. Instead of crude oil, the drill struck a powerful surge of mineral-rich hot water rising from deep within the Guaraní Aquifer — a geological structure that spans beneath Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay.
A second, deeper perforation reached 2,204 metres, unleashing the high-volume, high-temperature flow that now defines the complex. At the surface, water temperatures of up to 46 °C made this the hottest documented thermal source in the country.
The land, initially held by the Diocese of Salto, passed to the Municipality of Salto. The first individual bathing pavilions opened, and the site was officially habilitaded for public use — the beginning of what would become a regional tourism landmark.
Pools, changing rooms, accommodation and service facilities were consolidated throughout the decade, transforming the area into a planned tourist complex drawing visitors from across Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil.
Daymán now offers 11 regulated pools, a medical hydrotherapy complex, the Acuamanía water park, luxury hotel accommodation and spa treatments — all anchored by water whose therapeutic credentials have been confirmed by modern hydrochemical analysis published in international journals.
What Makes Daymán's Water
So Extraordinary?
The waters of Termas del Daymán are not simply hot — they are mineralogically rich. Analysis published in Balnea (Vol. 12, 2026) by the University of the Republic (Uruguay) identified a suite of bioactive compounds whose concentrations meet or exceed the minimum therapeutic thresholds recognised by the Spanish School of Medical Hydrology (Complutense University, Madrid). The water is colourless, odourless and entirely drinkable.
The dominant ionic pair. Bicarbonate waters are associated with anti-inflammatory activity, improved cellular hydration and digestive well-being when taken as drinking water.
Linked to anti-inflammatory and dermatological effects. Silica-rich waters have a long tradition in European balneotherapy for skin conditions, joint inflammation and connective tissue health.
Associated with improved bone and joint metabolism. Boron is increasingly recognised for its role in reducing markers of arthritis and supporting bone mineral density.
A natural neuromodulator. Even at trace concentrations, lithium in drinking water has been associated with calmer mood, neuroprotection and reduced stress markers in population studies.
Related to trophic (nourishing) bone effects, complementing the water's broader musculoskeletal action. Particularly relevant for older visitors or those with osteoporosis.
A trace element with potential metabolic influence, under active research for its role in insulin sensitivity and glucose regulation.

The pools are thermoregulated to 35–42 °C in winter and 35–38 °C in summer. Sustained immersion above 33 °C is the recognised minimum threshold for therapeutic balneological effects.
