I am Mathias Nicola, born in Salto and based in London. Visit Salto is my independent site about my home city, and this page is for people who build trips for a living: tour operators, travel designers and agents who sell Uruguay and Argentina. If you need a contact on the ground in Salto, that is what I do, at no cost to you or your clients.

Salto in 60 seconds

Uruguay's second city, on the Uruguay River, 500 km north of Montevideo on Ruta 3. The Salto Grande dam and its road bridge connect it with Concordia, Argentina, and a passenger boat (the lancha) crosses the river in 10 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The hot springs are the reason most people come: Termas del Daymán, 10 km south of the city, open 8am to 10pm every day of the year, UYU 200 at the gate; Termas del Arapey, 80 km north, the oldest in the country; and the private parks around them. Then the river itself, the citrus and olive country, the estancias, and the dorado fishing below the dam, where the all-tackle world record was caught in 2006. The whole of it is on Explore.

Where it fits in an itinerary

  • Buenos Aires to Iguazú with a stop: a direct overnight bus from Retiro reaches Salto in 6 to 7 hours. From Salto, the bus over the dam to Concordia takes about 1 hour, and the route continues through Entre Ríos.
  • Montevideo and the north: about 6 hours by bus from Tres Cruces, or 4.5 to 5 hours by car on Ruta 3. From Salto, the lancha or the bus takes you into Argentina.
  • By air: Paranair flies Montevideo to Salto in 1 hour, three times a week; the route is suspended at the time of writing, October 2026.
  • Car hire: one-way hire between Salto and Montevideo is possible. Details, tolls and the electric-car chargers on Getting There.

What I can arrange

Every experience below runs with a local operator, a guide, a club or a park. The prices are theirs, paid on the day in Uruguayan pesos at the equivalent of the price shown. I add nothing on top.

"On request" means a price per group, confirmed when you ask. Each page has the full description, what is included and the booking form.

How it works

Your client, or you on their behalf, sends a request from the experience page. I confirm by WhatsApp or email within 12 hours, with the meeting point and the exact amount. Nothing is paid in advance: the traveller pays the operator on the day, in pesos. To arrange it I pass your client's name, contact details and the details of the request to the operator, and nothing else. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before. There is no agency in the middle and no commission, so the price your client pays is the local price. For groups, or for anything not listed, write to me.

Suggested itineraries

Three itineraries with every item priced, built from the same experiences, buses and hotels: Salto for Backpackers, 3 nights, about US$170 per person all in; Hot Springs Day at Daymán, 1 day, about US$65 per person plus spa items; and Termas de San Nicanor & Estancia La Aurora, 2 days and 1 night, about US$175 per person for the priced items.

Where to stay

I hold no allotments and no net rates. Three hotels have their own page here, with typical 2026 prices and direct booking: Altos del Arapey, Hotel Horacio Quiroga and Los Naranjos. The Stay page covers the five zones, Daymán, the city, Salto Grande, Arapey and San Nicanor, and the 0% VAT rule for foreign guests.

Photos and material

The site uses real photographs only, many of them by the Salto photographer Marcelo Cattani, always credited. If you need images or text for a proposal or a brochure, write to me and I will send what I have, with the credits that apply.

WTM London, 3 November 2026 I will be at ExCeL on Tuesday 3 November as a visitor. Email mathias.nicola@visitsalto.com or WhatsApp +44 7541 534436 to arrange 15 minutes.
